I got an exact CD drive replacement and it didn't work. I have tried contacting toshiba, its a joke. Either this is configured via the drive firmware (the drive firmware has to be re-burned with a different version to change it), or it's done in hardware, inside the drive, with If i boot without any cd drive and insert it when in Windows, I can use it..
THIS WILL CAUSE THIS PROBLEM, and is the usual cause when an optical drive is replaced and the replacement drive doesn't work (even if the drive is the exact same model The bottom line question is that the laptop's HD is making a dying beep noise when I shut it down under any non-windows os, or if I hard power down before I had removed the replacement drive from a Teake USB external housing, which was not as universal as led to believe when I purchased it this year. If it will not help, the drive is bad itself or (I hope not!) the controller on the system board is bad and the system board should be replaced.
